There are two different ice problems that get described the same way. In the first, the small tube that delivers water into the ice maker has frozen solid, so nothing fills. In the second, ice has built up beneath or around the assembly, sometimes locking the bin in place. They have different causes and the second one usually involves water going somewhere it should not.
Why a Fill Tube Freezes
Water sits briefly in the tube between fills. Normally it empties and the next cycle refills it. It freezes when the fill is slow enough that water lingers, when the compartment near the tube is colder than intended, or when a fill valve seeps slightly and keeps the tube wet between cycles. A filter at the end of its life and a partially closed household supply valve are the usual reasons for a slow fill, and a valve that does not close fully is the usual reason for the seep.
This is why simply melting the ice is not a repair: unless the slow fill or the seeping valve is corrected, it refreezes, often within days.
Why Ice Builds Up Underneath
- A fill that overshoots, so water spills past the mould before it freezes.
- A defrost drain that has frozen shut, leaving melt water to refreeze where it lands.
- A door or gasket that lets humid room air in, which condenses and freezes on the coldest surfaces.
- An ice maker that harvests a cycle late, so cubes partly melt and refreeze as a mass.
What You Can Safely Do
Empty the bin and set it aside. Wipe up standing water. Check that the door closes properly and the gasket seals along its whole length. Confirm the filter is the correct cartridge, fully seated, and not overdue. Verify the household supply valve is fully open. If you want the ice gone before service, warm water and patience are the safe tools.
What to avoid: heat guns and hair dryers on high, which distort the plastic housing; metal tools and screwdrivers against the tube or mould, which puncture lines and crack the mould; and prying a frozen bin free, which snaps rails. Those three are behind a good share of the repairs that end up costing more than the original fault.
When to Book It
Recurring frost is the clearest signal. If you have thawed a fill tube more than once, the underlying cause is still there. Book ice maker repair and say whether the ice reappears in days or weeks, and whether the dispenser water flow feels normal, since that separates a restricted fill from a leaking valve before anyone opens a panel.
