Ductless Mini-Split Repair, Done Right the First Time

GE Appliances lists ductless heating and cooling in its Air & Water range, and on these systems the indoor head, the outdoor unit and the line set each have their own failure patterns.

Ductless systems put a small refrigeration system in each room, which changes how they fail. Indoor-side calls are filters, blower wheels, condensate drains and the control board in the head. Outdoor-side calls are the fan motor, the capacitor, the reversing valve on heat-pump models and the inverter board. Between them sits the line set, where a leak or a poor flare from the original installation shows up as slowly falling capacity.

We read the fault code from the head, check the simple things (filters, drain, airflow and clearances) and then work through the electrical side. Refrigerant work is regulated and is carried out only by a technician licensed to handle it; where the fault is a leak in the line set we explain the repair honestly rather than topping the system up and leaving.

Ductless Mini-Split Repair FAQ

Most often the condensate drain: the pan or line is blocked with dust and biofilm, or the line has lost its downward slope. It can also be a head that is icing because the filter is loaded or the charge is low. Turn the system off and get the drain cleared before it soaks the wall.

Usually not. Heat pumps run a defrost cycle to clear frost from the outdoor coil, and during it the indoor head stops delivering warm air for several minutes. Steam rising from the outdoor unit during that time is normal. Long or constant defrost cycles are worth checking.

The indoor filters - wash and dry them on the schedule in the owner's manual for your model - and keeping the outdoor unit clear of leaves and snow. Refrigerant, line-set and electrical work is regulated and belongs to a technician licensed for it.
