A disposer has three failure areas: the motor and its overload, the grinding chamber and impellers, and the seals where it meets the sink and the drain line. Jams and tripped overloads make up most calls and are often cleared on the spot. Seal failures show as water under the sink, and the location of the drip tells us whether it is the flange, the dishwasher inlet, the discharge elbow or the housing itself.
Because a disposer is plumbed into the drain, we also check the trap and the dishwasher connection – a disposer blamed for slow drainage is frequently sitting behind a partly blocked trap arm. Where the work crosses into plumbing that needs a licensed trade in your area, we say so before starting.
