Softener faults sort neatly. If the resin never gets recharged the symptom is hard water, and the cause is in the brine side: salt bridging, a plugged injector or venturi, an air check that has failed, or a control valve not sequencing. If the softener recharges but water tastes salty, the rinse or the drain is restricted. If it regenerates constantly, the controller settings or the meter are usually to blame.
We test the actual hardness before and after the unit, watch a regeneration cycle through its stages rather than trusting the display, and check the bypass and plumbing connections for leaks. Where the work crosses into plumbing that needs a licensed trade in your area, we say so before starting.
Common Water Softener Problems
Hard-water signs returning - scale, spotting, poor lather
Salt bridging into a solid crust in the brine tank
Softener not regenerating on schedule, or running constantly
Salty-tasting water after a regeneration cycle
Water leaking at the control valve or bypass
Error code or blank display on the controller
Why Trust Us With Your GE Water Softener
- Tested, Not Guessed | We test the suspected water softener part before recommending that anything is replaced.
- Parts for Popular Models | Commonly needed water softener parts travel with our technicians; less common parts are ordered and the return visit is scheduled before we leave.
- Safety First | Power, water and gas are isolated before we work on your water softener, and high-voltage and refrigerant work is handled only by the technician.
- Warranty-Aware Advice | If your water softener may still be under manufacturer coverage we tell you, because a repair by anyone other than an authorized technician can put that coverage at risk.
