What 001 / 003 Means
001 and 003 report the inlet thermistor - the temperature sensor at the air inlet - as defective. These numeric codes come from the GFD-series GE dryer chart and are read out of the control rather than shown during a normal cycle, so the same number means something different on GE washers. Without a trustworthy inlet reading the control cannot manage heat properly, so cycles run cold, run long, or cut out early.
Common Causes of 001 / 003
- Failed inlet thermistor
- Damaged or corroded sensor wiring
- Connector loose at the sensor
- Control board input fault
- Heavily restricted airflow pushing readings out of range
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Before anything electrical, deal with airflow: clean the lint screen (and wash off any fabric-softener film with warm water), pull the dryer out and check the vent hose and the duct to the outside are clear, and confirm strong airflow at the outside vent with the dryer running. Restricted venting is both the most common cause of heat complaints and a fire risk in its own right. Then do one power reset: switch the dryer's breaker off for a minute and back on. If the code stays stored, the thermistor or its wiring needs replacing, which means the cabinet opened.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The parts involved are inside the cabinet, and an electric dryer runs on a 240 V circuit - the terminal block and heater connections are not owner territory.
- A thermistor must be measured against a known temperature to be confirmed - swapping parts on a guess often means the wrong part.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
