What Probe Means
The word Probe on the display means an open temperature probe, or the probe not being plugged in during a temp-cook function. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. GE's own instruction is to verify the probe is securely inserted into both the microwave wall socket and the food.
Common Causes of Probe
- Probe not plugged in while a temp-cook function is selected
- Probe not fully seated in the socket
- Damaged probe or cable
- Dirty or damaged cavity socket
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Push the probe plug fully home in the cavity socket and make sure the tip is properly inserted into the food, not touching bone or the dish. If you are not using the probe, select a cooking mode that does not call for it. GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- None - seating or removing the probe is entirely owner-side.
- A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
