A washer that thumps its way across the laundry room during spin is doing more than making noise: the movement stresses the suspension, the drain hose and the water connections. It is worth diagnosing promptly, and the likely causes are short in number.
One: Shipping Bolts Still Fitted
This applies to front-loaders that have recently been delivered or moved. Transit bolts brace the drum for shipping and have to be removed before the first wash. Left in place, the machine cannot absorb any movement and shakes hard. The manual identifies them and where they are stored afterwards. Always refit them before moving the machine again.
Two: Level and Footing
Check with a spirit level front to back and side to side, then push down on each corner in turn. If the machine rocks, adjust the feet until all four make firm contact and the lock nuts are tightened. On a wooden floor, spring in the joists amplifies normal vibration, and a washer positioned between joists is worse than one over a joist. Anti-vibration pads help a floor problem; they do not fix an unbalanced load or a worn suspension.
Three: The Load
- A single heavy item, a comforter, a bath mat or one pair of jeans, moves to one side and stays there.
- Very small loads can swing more than full ones, because there is nothing to balance against.
- Waterproof items such as mattress protectors trap water and become extremely heavy on one side.
- Bedding that has wrapped into a rope needs untangling before it will distribute.
Pause the cycle, redistribute by hand, spreading items around the basket rather than heaping them, and restart the spin.
Four: Worn Suspension
If the machine is level, the load is spread and the bolts are out, and vibration has still grown worse over months, the mechanical parts that absorb movement are the likely answer: shock absorbers or struts, suspension rods on a top-loader, or worn bearings. Bearing wear usually announces itself as a rumble or grinding that changes with spin speed, and left long enough it can damage the outer tub, which turns a moderate repair into a major one.
That is the reason not to live with it. Book a GE washer repair if the shaking has become progressively worse, or if you hear rumbling or grinding during spin. A short phone video of the machine at full spin genuinely helps.
