What C3 Means
C3 is GE's code for a dishwasher that will not drain at all - the control tried to pump out and saw no result. GE's published step is to disconnect power at the circuit breaker for 30 seconds and reset, then contact service if the code continues, which reflects that C3 often involves the pump or its control rather than a simple restriction.
Common Causes of C3
- Blocked drain hose, air gap or disposer inlet
- Object jammed in the drain pump impeller
- Failed drain pump or pump wiring fault
- Control board not driving the pump
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the dishwasher off. If the tub is full, bail out what you can with a cup and sponge before doing anything else, so you are not working around standing water. Clear the filter at the bottom of the tub, run the disposer, check the air gap, and confirm the drain hose is not kinked. Then switch the breaker for the dishwasher off for 30 seconds and back on, and run a drain or rinse cycle. If C3 comes back with the drain path clear, that is the point to book service.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Diagnosing a pump that will not run means live electrical testing at the pump connector under a machine that still has water in it.
- The impeller housing is behind the sump; opening it with the tub full floods the cabinet and can wet the control.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
