What dE Means

dE indicates the lid is open. GE publishes this as part of the Consumer Help Indicator set on 2017 and newer electronic-control washers - messages meant for owners to act on, not technician fault codes. A washer will not agitate or spin with the lid up, so the cycle waits. It shows up most often when the lid is closed but the switch or the latch is not registering it.

Common Causes of dE

  • Lid genuinely not fully closed, or laundry holding it up
  • Debris in the latch area
  • Worn or misaligned lid latch
  • Failed lid switch or lid lock assembly
  • Damaged switch wiring

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Close the lid firmly and restart the cycle. Check nothing is under the lid edge - a sock caught on the rim is enough - and that no laundry is heaped high enough to hold the lid a few millimetres open. Wipe the latch area on the lid and the cabinet. If dE shows with the lid clearly shut, the lid switch or lock needs looking at and the machine will not run in the meantime.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for closing the lid and clearing the latch area.
  • The lid lock is an interlock: bypassing it lets the basket spin with the lid open, which is a serious injury risk and never a DIY shortcut.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

dE FAQ

No. On a washer it means the lid is open; on a refrigerator GE's dE is about the defrost system. Same letters, different appliance and control.

No - defeating the interlock removes the protection that stops the basket spinning with the lid up.
