What E49 Means
E49 means the drive motor was overloaded - it was asked to turn more than it could. This belongs to the E-code set on GE front-load washers (the GFW-style machines); the same code string means something different on GE top-load machines and on the older GE Profile front-load platform. Very heavy wet loads, a drum that is mechanically stiff, or a motor and drive that are no longer performing all produce it.
Common Causes of E49
- Overloaded drum
- Object trapped between inner drum and outer tub
- Failing drum bearing
- Motor or inverter losing performance
- Load jammed solid to one side
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off and check the drum turns freely by hand when empty, listening for grinding or scraping. Remove anything trapped between drum and tub. Reduce the load size, especially with towels, bedding and anything that holds a lot of water, and restart. If E49 appears on modest loads with a freely turning drum, the drive needs a technician.
