What 3 Means

Code 3 means a locked motor - the control tried to turn the drive and it would not move. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. Something is mechanically stopping the basket, or the motor itself has failed in a way that stops it turning.

Common Causes of 3

  • Garment or object jammed under the impeller or agitator
  • Failed drive motor
  • Seized transmission or bearing
  • Drive belt or coupling failure on belt-driven models
  • Motor control fault

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the power off. With the basket empty, try turning it by hand: it should move. If it is solid, look for a garment jammed under the impeller or agitator, or an object wedged at the basket edge - and do not force it. One power reset is reasonable: unplug the washer or switch its breaker off for a minute, then restore power and run a short cycle. If code 3 returns or the basket will not turn, book service.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Clearing a jam properly often means lifting the impeller or agitator, which needs the right tools to avoid breaking the splines.
  • The parts involved are under the top panel or in the base at line voltage, in a machine that may still hold water.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

It does - a motor trying to start against a locked drive often hums. Switch off rather than repeat the attempt; stalled motors overheat.

A coin alone usually rattles, but clothing wrapped around the impeller shaft absolutely can lock the drive.
