What 8 Means

Code 8 reports a water level pressure sensor failure. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. That sensor tells the control how much water is in the basket, so fills become unreliable - either too little for the load or, in the worst case, too much.

Common Causes of 8

  • Failed pressure sensor
  • Blocked, split or kinked pressure hose
  • Debris or water in the pressure chamber
  • Harness or connector fault
  • Control input fault

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Check the drain hose is not pushed deep into the standpipe, which can siphon and upset level readings. One power reset is reasonable: unplug the washer or switch its breaker off for a minute, then restore power and run a short cycle. If code 8 returns, close the taps between loads and book service rather than leaving the machine running unattended.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • A level-sensing fault plus a sticking inlet valve is the classic flood scenario, so this is checked properly rather than guessed.
  • The parts involved are under the top panel or in the base at line voltage, in a machine that may still hold water.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Yes - both are symptoms of the control working from a level reading it cannot trust.

Either. A pinched or sludged hose is cheap to fix, which is why it is checked before the sensor is condemned.
