What 17 Means

Code 17 means the basket would not spin at the start of a wash cycle. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. The control checks the basket can move before committing to the cycle; when it cannot, something mechanical or in the drive is usually stopping it.

Common Causes of 17

  • Garment or object jamming the basket
  • Mode shifter fault
  • Drive motor or transmission fault
  • Failed basket speed sensor
  • Overloaded basket packed solid

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

With the power off and the basket empty, turn it by hand - it should move freely. Look for a garment wrapped under the impeller or agitator and clear anything jammed at the basket rim, without forcing parts. One power reset is reasonable: unplug the washer or switch its breaker off for a minute, then restore power and run a short cycle. If the code returns, the drive, shifter or motor needs checking.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Lifting an impeller or agitator to clear a jam needs the correct tools to avoid breaking splines or the seal.
  • The parts involved are under the top panel or in the base at line voltage, in a machine that may still hold water.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

17 FAQ

It can - a basket packed tight will not move freely at the start of the cycle, so easing the load is worth trying first.

No. Out-of-balance happens during spin with a load on one side; code 17 is the basket not turning at all when the cycle begins.
