What 22 Means
Code 22 means the washer could not balance the dry load well enough to start. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. The control tries to sense and settle the load before filling; a single bulky item or a heap on one side defeats that.
Common Causes of 22
- Single bulky item, or load heaped to one side
- Bedding twisted into a ball
- Washer not level or on a flexing floor
- Basket obstructed so it cannot settle
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Spread the load evenly around the basket rather than piling it on one side, and avoid washing one heavy item on its own - add a couple of similar items to balance it. Check the washer sits level and solid on all four feet. Then restart.
