What 26 / 31 Means
Codes 26 and 31 report an out-of-balance condition during the final spin, and share one meaning on the chart. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. The washer reduced or abandoned the spin rather than hammering the suspension, so the load comes out wetter than usual.
Common Causes of 26 / 31
- Load gathered on one side at the end of the cycle
- Single heavy item spinning alone
- Washer not level or on a springy floor
- Worn suspension rods or dampers
- Balance sensing fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Redistribute the load by hand and run a Spin or Drain & Spin. Split bedding and heavy items into their own loads, and check the machine is level and solid on all four feet - a flexing or sloping floor makes this far more common. If it happens with every load on a level machine, the suspension or balance sensing needs checking.
