What 29 Means
Code 29 means excessive suds caused the cycle to stop. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. Too much foam stops water draining properly and can make the pump cavitate, so the control pauses and tries to clear it rather than continuing.

- Too much detergent for the load
- Non-HE detergent in an HE machine
- Very soft water increasing foam
- Detergent residue built up in the tub
- Small load washed with a full dose
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Use less detergent, and check you are using the type your machine asks for - high-efficiency machines need HE detergent, and a normal detergent produces far too much foam. Run a rinse and spin, or a tub-clean cycle, to clear the residue. Measure detergent by the load size rather than filling the cap, and remember softener adds to the foam.
