What 009 Means
009 reports a drive motor problem - the control did not get the motor response it expected. These numeric codes come from the GFD-series GE dryer chart and are read out of the control rather than shown during a normal cycle, so the same number means something different on GE washers. The drum will not turn reliably, so cycles either do not start or stop shortly after they begin.
Common Causes of 009
- Failed drive motor
- Motor thermal overload tripped after overheating
- Broken drive belt or seized drum roller loading the motor
- Motor wiring or connector fault
- Control output fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the breaker off. With the dryer empty, turn the drum by hand: it should rotate with light resistance. Grinding, scraping or a drum that will not move suggests a mechanical problem as well as a motor one - a broken belt, a seized roller or an idler pulley. One power reset is worth trying; if 009 stays, book service.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The parts involved are inside the cabinet, and an electric dryer runs on a 240 V circuit - the terminal block and heater connections are not owner territory.
- A tripped thermal overload, a seized roller and a failed motor all present the same way from outside - and a motor bought on a guess is an expensive mistake.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
