What F2 / F20 Means
On a GE wall oven, F2 and F20 mean the cavity temperature went past a preset threshold and the control shut the heat off. GE publishes this among its range and wall oven error, fault and function codes for models with electronic oven controls, and asks for a trained technician to diagnose F-codes. On double wall ovens it is worth noting which cavity showed the code, because each has its own sensor and element circuits.
Common Causes of F2 / F20
- Oven temperature sensor reading low, so the control keeps heating
- Control board relay stuck closed, leaving an element energised
- Failed electronic control
- Cooling fan not running, letting the console overheat
- Wiring fault at the element or sensor
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the cavity cool first - overheating and self-clean faults leave the oven and door far hotter than a normal bake. GE's own first step is to switch the oven's circuit breaker off for a minute or two and then restore power. Do not run self-clean to test it. If the code returns, switch the breaker off and book service - an oven that overheats once can do it again, and a built-in oven sits inside cabinetry where a runaway element is the last thing you want unattended.

- A stuck relay can keep an element powered - in a cabinet-mounted oven that is a fire concern, not just a cooking problem.
- On a built-in wall oven the control and door-lock wiring are reached by unseating the oven from the cabinet - a two-person job with a heavy appliance on a 240 V circuit.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
