What F96 Means
F96 means the CTA module is disconnected or has a low battery, and GE's remedy is to reconnect the module or replace the battery. The module relates to the heater's connected and demand-response features rather than to heating water, so the appliance itself keeps working.
Common Causes of F96
- Module unplugged or its connector loose
- Module battery flat
- Failed module
- Communication fault with the module
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Check the module is properly connected where your manual shows it, and replace its battery with the specified type if one is fitted. If you do not use the connected features, the heater continues to work - but it is still worth clearing so the display is not permanently showing a code that masks a later one.
