Agitator dog failure is the classic wear item on agitator washers: the top of the agitator turns freely in one direction and clothes stop moving properly. It is an inexpensive repair and a common one on machines several years old.
Blocked inlet screens produce slow fills and long cycles that look like valve failures. With the washer unplugged and both taps closed, the screens can be checked at the valve inlets, though a technician will normally do this as part of a fill complaint.
