Nobody enjoys spending money on an appliance twice. The decision gets easier when you stop looking for a universal rule and instead ask three specific questions about the machine in front of you.
Question One: What Failed?
Refrigerator faults fall into rough tiers. Door gaskets, thermostats, fans, ice makers, water valves, dispenser switches and control boards are replaceable components, and on a unit that is otherwise sound, replacing one is normally worth doing. A sealed-system problem, meaning the compressor or a refrigerant leak, sits in a different tier: the labour is specialised, the parts cost more, and on an older cabinet it is frequently the point where replacement becomes the sensible call.
Question Two: How Old Is It?
Use the rating plate and the serial number to pin down the approximate build year. A repairable fault on a unit only a few years old is usually easy to justify. The same fault on a refrigerator well into its second decade deserves a harder look, because the parts that have not failed yet are the same age as the one that did. There is no magic cut-off year, but the closer a unit gets to the end of its expected service life, the more a large repair becomes a bet.
Question Three: What Did the Diagnosis Say?
This is where guessing costs people money. Symptoms overlap: a refrigerator that is not cooling can have a failed fan, a defrost fault, a stuck damper, a control problem or a sealed-system leak, and the repair bills for those are not remotely similar. A paid diagnosis that ends in a written estimate converts the question from a gamble into arithmetic.
Other Things Worth Weighing
- Parts availability. Some components for older models are no longer produced, which settles the question on its own.
- Installation reality. A built-in or counter-depth unit in a tight cabinet opening is not a like-for-like swap, and the replacement cost is more than the sticker price.
- How it has behaved so far. One failure on a unit that has been reliable is different from the third call in two years.
- Running cost. A much older unit does use more electricity than a current one, though the saving alone rarely justifies replacing a working refrigerator.
