What CI Means

CI is GE's prompt to check the icemaker for proper operation on electronic-control refrigerators. The control has noticed the icemaker is not producing as expected. It covers everything from the icemaker being switched off or the water supply being closed to a failed icemaker module or a frozen fill tube.

Common Causes of CI

  • Icemaker turned off in the controls, or the bin is jammed with clumped ice
  • Household water supply valve closed, or the supply line kinked or frozen
  • Water filter overdue or not seated, restricting fill
  • Frozen fill tube at the back of the icemaker
  • Failed icemaker module, fill valve or thermostat

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Do the owner-level checks in order. Confirm the icemaker is switched on in the controls, that the freezer door closes fully, and that the household water shut-off feeding the refrigerator is open. Look for a full bin or a clump of ice jamming the arm or auger, and give a new installation or a recent filter change the 24 hours GE allows for the first batches. If the bin is empty and the water supply is definitely on, stop there.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Thawing a frozen fill tube with anything hot or sharp risks splitting the tube and turning an icemaker fault into a water leak in the cabinet.
  • The fill valve and icemaker harness sit behind the rear access cover at line voltage.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

CI FAQ

Dispensed water proves the supply and filter side, so what is left is the icemaker itself - the fill valve, the module or a frozen fill tube. That is where a technician starts.

GE asks for about 24 hours before judging ice production on a newly installed refrigerator or after a filter change, and the first batches are normally discarded.
