A refrigerator gets rid of heat through its condenser coils. When those coils are coated in dust, lint and pet hair, the heat has nowhere to go, so the compressor runs longer, the cabinet struggles in summer, and the whole system operates hotter than it was designed to. It is the cheapest maintenance available on the appliance and the one most often skipped.
Do This First
Unplug the refrigerator, or switch off its breaker, before you remove any panel or grille. You will be reaching near a fan and near wiring, and the fan can start on its own while the unit is powered. Only then start the work below.
The Job
- Find the coils. On many GE models they sit behind a snap-off or screwed grille at the lower front; on others they are at the rear of the cabinet. Your owner's manual shows which layout you have.
- Vacuum with a brush attachment or a narrow crevice tool, working with the fins rather than across them, so you do not bend them.
- Use a long, flexible coil brush for the dust the vacuum cannot reach, then vacuum again.
- Clear the floor area and the fan grille of dust while the panel is off.
- Refit the grille, plug the refrigerator back in, and confirm it starts normally.
Leave anything deeper alone. If you can see the fan but cannot reach the coils without unbolting a shroud, stop there and add it to a service visit instead.
How Often
Every six to twelve months suits most kitchens. Move to every three or four months if you have shedding pets, carpet near the kitchen, a household member who smokes, or a refrigerator in a garage or basement workshop where sawdust circulates. A quick look with a flashlight tells you more than any schedule.
What Clean Coils Will Not Fix
Coil cleaning helps a refrigerator that has been gradually getting warmer or running almost constantly. It will not rescue a unit that has stopped cooling entirely, one that is icing up on the freezer back wall, or one whose fresh-food section is warm while the freezer is cold, all of which point elsewhere. If temperatures do not improve within a day of cleaning, that is the signal to book GE refrigerator repair rather than repeat the cleaning.
