When a dryer runs a full cycle and the laundry comes out cold and damp, the motor, belt and controls are clearly working. What has failed is the heat, and the possible causes divide sharply depending on how your dryer produces it.
Check These Three First
- The cycle setting. Air Fluff, Air Dry or a no-heat refresh option tumbles without heat by design. It is an easy setting to leave selected.
- The vent. A blocked vent can trip the high-limit thermostat, after which the dryer keeps tumbling without heating. Clean the lint screen, check the outside vent hood opens with airflow, and look for a crushed flexible duct behind the machine.
- Breakers, on an electric dryer. An electric dryer uses two breaker legs: one runs the motor, the other the heating element. If only one has tripped, the drum still turns but nothing heats. Check the panel for a breaker that looks on but has moved, and reset it fully off then on. If it trips again, stop and get it looked at rather than resetting repeatedly.
Gas Dryers
If the dryer is gas and the gas supply is on, a no-heat fault usually involves the igniter, the flame sensor, the gas valve coils or a thermal fuse. None of those is a homeowner job. Do not open the burner compartment, and if you smell gas at any point, leave the area, do not operate switches, and contact your gas utility before anything else. Work on gas components by someone who is not an authorized technician can also put warranty coverage at risk, so check your warranty terms.
Electric Dryers
The common findings are a burned-out heating element, an open thermal fuse, or a failed thermostat, and often a blocked vent behind all three. The fuse and thermostat are safety devices: they open because something else went wrong, usually overheating from restricted airflow. Replacing the fuse without clearing the vent means it opens again, and continuing to operate a dryer in that state is a fire risk. Element and fuse work involves the machine opened up with 240-volt wiring exposed.
What to Have Ready When You Call
Say whether the dryer is gas or electric, whether it has ever heated since it was installed, whether the vent has been cleaned in the past year, and whether a breaker has tripped. A dryer that never heated after an installation or a move points at the connection or the vent rather than a component. Book a GE dryer repair and mention if you noticed a burning smell, which changes the urgency.
