What P1 Means

On GE 50-pint dehumidifiers with a built-in pump, P1 appears when the unit is set to Pump Out Mode but water is not being pumped out. GE's documented remedy is to check the pump hose is properly installed on the dehumidifier and the bucket is securely in place, then reset the unit by unplugging it for 30 seconds.

Common Causes of P1

  • Pump hose not fitted properly or kinked
  • Discharge end blocked, or lifted higher than the pump can manage
  • Bucket not seated correctly
  • Bucket full and the pump unable to clear it
  • Failed pump or float switch

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the unit off. Check the pump hose is pushed fully onto its outlet and is not kinked, and that its discharge end is not higher than the pump can lift or blocked at the sink or drain. Make sure the bucket is seated properly - a bucket slightly out of position stops the unit running at all. Empty it if full, refit everything, then unplug for 30 seconds and restart.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for the hose and bucket checks - GE documents both as owner steps.
  • A pump that still will not run afterwards means the cabinet opened, with the fan, compressor and line-voltage wiring inside.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

P1 FAQ

Each model has a maximum lift in its manual; exceeding it is one of the commonest causes of this code.

Yes - switch out of Pump Out Mode and empty the bucket manually, which is a reasonable workaround while waiting for service.
