What C6 Means

C6 tells you the water reaching the dishwasher is too cold. GE states the incoming water temperature should be at least 120F, and its published advice is practical rather than technical: run the tap first, adjust the water heater, avoid using hot water elsewhere at the same time, and choose a longer cycle. It is a performance warning, not a broken part.

Common Causes of C6

  • Water heater set too low or a long pipe run to the kitchen
  • Hot water being drawn elsewhere during the cycle
  • Dishwasher connected to a cold supply by mistake
  • Failed water heating element or thermistor in the dishwasher

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Run the kitchen hot tap until the water is genuinely hot, then start the dishwasher - that clears the cooled water sitting in the pipe. Avoid running a shower or washing machine on the same hot supply during the cycle. If your water heater is set low, raising it towards 120F helps, but keep scald risk in mind, especially with children or elderly people in the house, and make heater adjustments to the manufacturer's instructions. Selecting a longer or heated-wash cycle gives the dishwasher more time to heat water itself.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None - running the tap first and reviewing water heater settings are routine.
  • If the supply is genuinely hot and C6 persists, the dishwasher heater circuit needs testing, which is live electrical work under the tub.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

C6 FAQ

It will run, but cleaning and drying suffer with cold water, and detergent does not dissolve properly.

Run the hot tap into a cup and use a kitchen thermometer. Around 120F at the tap is what GE asks for at the dishwasher inlet.
