What F36 Means
F36 means the current sensing module - the CSM - has tripped. This code belongs to GE's LCD-display dishwasher controls (the PDT/PDP-style panels that spell out F-numbers), not to the older C1-C8 panels. It is a protective device: it cut power to a circuit because the current it measured was outside safe limits. A protection device doing its job is a reason to stop and investigate, not to keep restarting the machine.
Common Causes of F36
- Shorted or failing heating element
- Motor or pump drawing excessive current
- Wiring or connector fault causing a short to ground
- Water intrusion into an electrical connection
- Failed current sensing module or control board
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Leave the dishwasher off and, if the breaker for it has tripped, do not keep resetting it. One controlled attempt is reasonable: breaker off 30 seconds, back on, and start a cycle while you are in the room. If F36 returns, or the breaker trips again, switch the circuit off and book service - repeatedly resetting a circuit that keeps protecting itself is how small faults become burnt connectors.
