What FTD / F56 Means
FTD and F56 are GE's failure-to-drain displays. The control ran the drain pump and the water did not leave the tub as expected. GE points to the drain hose, the air gap and the disposer as the things to check, which is the same drain path behind the C1, C2 and C3 codes on other GE control panels.
Common Causes of FTD / F56
- Blocked filter or sump
- Air gap or disposer inlet restricted
- Kinked drain hose or missing high loop
- Drain pump jammed or failed
- New installation with the disposer drain plug still in place
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the dishwasher off and bail out standing water with a cup and sponge. Lift out the bottom filter, rinse it and check the sump for glass, labels or a fruit sticker across the outlet. Clear the air gap if your sink has one, run the disposer for 30 seconds, and check the drain hose for kinks and that it has the required high loop under the counter. Restart with a rinse cycle to confirm the tub empties.

- Pump removal means disconnecting power and water and sliding the machine out with water inside it - the usual DIY casualties are the floor, the supply line and the pump wiring.
