What F2 Means
F2 is documented as a shorted thermal sensor. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. Advantium 120 V and 240 V models list the same meaning. The sensor that should protect against overheating is no longer giving a valid reading, so the control stops rather than cooking without that protection.
Common Causes of F2
- Failed thermal sensor
- Damaged or pinched sensor wiring
- Moisture or grease ingress at the sensor connector
- Control board input fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more. That is the limit of what to try. If F2 stays, the unit needs service rather than continued use - a microwave whose thermal protection is unreliable is not one to keep running, and over-the-range units sit right above a cooktop.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
- A shorted sensor and a control fault present identically, so the diagnosis needs measurements inside a cabinet nobody should open.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
