What F3 Means
F3 means a shorted touch pad panel - the membrane keypad is reporting a press that is not happening. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. Advantium models list the same meaning. Moisture, steam and cooking grease behind the panel are the usual causes, and the microwave often refuses new entries.
Common Causes of F3
- Steam, moisture or cleaner behind the panel
- Cooking grease under a button
- Worn or damaged membrane
- Failed control board
- Heat damage on an over-the-range unit above a busy cooktop
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wipe the panel dry with a soft cloth, working around the edges of the buttons, and avoid spraying cleaner directly at it - spray gets behind the membrane and causes exactly this. Let a steamy kitchen clear. GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more. If F3 returns with a dry panel, the touch panel needs replacing.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
- Reaching the panel means opening the cabinet where the high-voltage capacitor sits.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
