What 32 Means

Code 32 means the control could not unlock the lid. These numeric codes come from the GTW-series GE top-load washer chart - the impeller and agitator top-loaders with a locking lid. They are read out of the control in a service mode, so the same number means something different on GE front-load machines. The load is shut in until the lock releases, which is inconvenient but is the interlock behaving conservatively rather than dangerously.

Common Causes of 32

  • Failed lid lock assembly
  • Lock jammed mechanically
  • Wiring fault to the lock
  • Control output fault
  • Basket still turning, so the lock is held for safety

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Let the cycle finish, then switch the power off for a few minutes - many locks release once power is removed and the basket has stopped. Check nothing is jamming the lid or the striker. Do not lever the lid: forcing it breaks the lock and the lid trim, and turns a lock replacement into a bigger repair. If it stays locked, book service.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Forcing the lid is the most common way an inexpensive lock replacement becomes a lid and console repair.
  • The lock sits under the top panel next to the control wiring.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Power off for a few minutes is the safe attempt, once the basket has stopped. Beyond that it needs the lock released properly rather than levered.

Electrically yes with the power off, but wet laundry left shut in starts to smell, so it is worth booking promptly.
