What E46 Means

E46 means the drive motor is overheating. This belongs to the E-code set on GE front-load washers (the GFW-style machines); the same letters and numbers mean different things on GE top-load machines and on the older GE Profile front-load platform. Motors run hot when they are working too hard - overloaded drums, restricted drum movement or repeated out-of-balance spins - and the control stops to let it cool rather than cooking the windings.

Common Causes of E46

  • Overloaded drum, or heavy waterlogged items like rugs
  • Repeated out-of-balance spins making the motor work hard
  • Drum hard to turn because of a bearing or trapped object
  • Motor winding fault
  • Inverter driving the motor incorrectly

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Let the washer stand for an hour with the power off so the motor cools. Then check the drum turns freely by hand with nothing trapped, and think about load sizes: consistently overstuffed drums and heavy items like rugs are a common cause. Restart with a smaller load. If E46 returns on normal loads, the motor or its drive needs checking.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for letting it cool and reviewing load size.
  • The parts involved sit inside the cabinet at line voltage, in a machine that may still hold water.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

E46 FAQ

Bath mats and small rugs hold enormous amounts of water. Many are fine, but a large one can overload the drive - check the care label and your manual.

Airflow around the machine helps, but the safe approach is simply to leave it off for a while rather than restart repeatedly.
