What F74 Means
F74 means the filter is dirty. GE's documented remedy is to clean it according to the instructions in the owner's manual. On a heat pump water heater the filter keeps dust out of the evaporator, and a clogged one cuts efficiency long before it triggers a code.
Common Causes of F74
- Normal dust and lint accumulation
- Unit installed in a dusty space
- Filter not refitted correctly after cleaning
- Very long interval since the last clean

Remove and clean the filter as your manual describes - usually rinsing or vacuuming it, then refitting it dry. Do not run the unit without the filter in place. Clean it on a schedule rather than waiting for the code, especially in a garage, basement or laundry room where dust and lint are constant.
