GE Induction Cooktop Not Detecting a Pan, or Showing a Code

Induction elements only work with cookware they can couple to, and they shut themselves down when they get hot. Both behaviours read as faults if you are new to induction.

Induction heats the pan directly through a magnetic field rather than heating a surface that heats the pan. That single difference explains nearly all early complaints: the cookware has to participate, and the electronics under the glass have to stay cool enough to run.

Pan Detection

An element that beeps, flashes or shows a pan symbol and then stops usually cannot see usable cookware. Check three things:

  • Material. A kitchen magnet should stick firmly to the base. Aluminium, copper and most non-magnetic stainless will not work without an induction-compatible base. “Induction ready” markings on the base are a reliable guide.
  • Size. A pan much smaller than the element ring may not be detected at all. Each element has a minimum diameter, listed in the manual.
  • Flatness and contact. A warped base, or a pan lifted off the glass by trapped debris, breaks coupling. Wipe the glass and the base of the pan.

An element that worked yesterday and detects nothing today, with cookware that has not changed, is a different matter and worth reporting.

Noises That Are Normal

Induction is not silent. Humming or buzzing at high power, especially with lighter multi-ply pans, is the cookware responding to the field. A cooling fan running for a while after everything is switched off is also by design. So is a faint clicking as power cycles at low settings. None of these indicates a fault, though a sudden change in the character of a sound does.

When an Element Shuts Itself Off

Induction cooktops protect their own electronics, which sit directly under the glass. If the surface gets very hot, from an empty pan left on high, a boil-dry, or a large pan spanning two zones, the control will reduce power or shut a zone down until it cools. Recovery can take a few minutes. Blocked ventilation is a frequent culprit for repeat shutdowns: if the cooktop is installed above an oven or a drawer, the manufacturer's clearance and ventilation requirements have to be respected.

Codes and Real Faults

Write down any code exactly as it appears, along with which zone showed it and what was on the cooktop at the time. Faults worth booking include one zone that has stopped working while others are fine, repeated shutdowns during ordinary cooking, a cooktop that trips the breaker, or any crack in the glass. A cracked induction top should be switched off at the breaker and not used, because the surface is also the barrier over live electronics.

Book a GE cooktop repair for those, and mention whether the problem follows a particular zone or a particular pan. That one detail separates cookware from electronics.
