What dE (Defrost) Means

dE on a GE electronic-control refrigerator means the defrost system has not operated properly in the last 24 hours. Frost that should be melted off the evaporator coil during each defrost cycle is instead building up. As that frost thickens it blocks airflow, so the freezer slowly loses its ability to hold temperature even though the compressor keeps running.

Common Causes of dE (Defrost)

  • Failed defrost heater
  • Open defrost thermostat or thermistor
  • Defrost control circuit or main control board fault
  • Door seal or door-ajar problem loading the coil with humid air

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Check food temperatures with a thermometer first so you know how much time you have. Make sure nothing inside is blocking the rear air vents and that both doors seal fully, since a door left ajar dumps humid air onto the coil and can overwhelm defrost. One power reset is reasonable - unplug or switch off the breaker for a few minutes, restore power, and watch whether dE returns. If it does, book service; running the refrigerator for days with a defrost fault usually ends with everything in the freezer thawing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Reaching the defrost heater and thermostat means pulling the freezer rear panel, with the heater element and live wiring against the coil.
  • The aluminium coil tubing is soft enough to puncture with a screwdriver, which turns a repairable fault into a refrigerant leak.
  • Trying to clear frost with a heat gun or hairdryer has melted liners and damaged tubing on plenty of otherwise repairable refrigerators.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

dE (Defrost) FAQ

Emptying it and letting it thaw with the power off does clear the ice, but the fault comes back on the next cycle, so it is at best a stopgap before service.

Judge the food, not the display: put an appliance thermometer in the middle of each compartment. Under USDA guidance, refrigerated perishables held above 40F for more than 2 hours should be thrown out, and frozen food is only safe to refreeze while it still has ice crystals or reads 40F or below. Never decide by look or smell.
