What C1 Means
C1 is one of GE's published dishwasher codes on electronic-control models. The control expects the drain pump to empty the tub within about two minutes; C1 means it ran longer than that. GE's own advice points at the drain path rather than the dishwasher itself - the air gap, the drain hose and the disposer are the first suspects, because any restriction there slows the pump down.
Common Causes of C1
- Blocked or dirty air gap
- Kinked, crushed or too-long drain hose
- Food waste sitting in the disposer or drain branch
- Shipping plug left in the disposer drain inlet after installation
- Failing drain pump or a partly blocked pump impeller
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Turn the dishwasher off at the control first. If your sink has an air gap (the small chrome cap on the countertop), pop the cover and clear any sludge inside it. Run the garbage disposer for 30 seconds so the drain branch is clear, and check that the drain hose behind or under the cabinet is not kinked or crushed against a wall. If the dishwasher was just installed, make sure the drain-line plug in the disposer inlet was removed. Then run a short cycle and see whether C1 returns.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- None for the air gap, disposer and hose checks - those are routine owner maintenance.
- Getting to the drain pump means pulling the dishwasher out from under the counter with water still in the tub, and its wiring and the water line are both connected underneath.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
