What UE Means

UE means the laundry load is unbalanced. GE publishes this as part of the Consumer Help Indicator set on 2017 and newer electronic-control washers - messages meant for owners to act on, not technician fault codes. The washer detected weight gathered on one side of the basket and stopped rather than spinning a load that would hammer the suspension and walk across the floor.

Common Causes of UE

  • Single heavy item, or a load bunched to one side
  • Bedding twisted into a rope around other items
  • Washer not level, or on a soft or springy floor
  • Load too small for the basket
  • Worn suspension rods or shock absorbers on an older machine

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Open the lid or door, spread the load out by hand and separate anything that has wrapped into a rope - a single bath sheet or a fitted sheet holding everything else is the usual culprit. Restart with a Drain & Spin or Spin cycle. Then check the washer is level: rock each corner and adjust the feet until it sits solid on all four. Washing one heavy item on its own, or mixing one towel with light clothes, produces UE repeatedly no matter how good the machine is.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None - redistributing the load and levelling the machine are routine owner steps.
  • If UE continues with a properly spread, level load, the suspension or the sensing needs checking, which means the cabinet opened on a machine full of water.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

UE FAQ

A single wet towel gathers all the weight on one side; a mixed load spreads it, so the basket can balance itself.

The code exists to prevent damage. It is the repeated hard spinning of an unbalanced load that wears suspension parts.
