What F2 / F20 Means
F2 and F20 mean the oven temperature has exceeded a preset threshold - the control measured the cavity getting hotter than it should and shut the heat down. GE publishes this among its range and wall oven codes for models with electronic oven controls, and states that a trained service technician should diagnose an F-code rather than the owner. This is a protective shutdown, and the fact that the protection worked is not a reason to keep using the oven until it is diagnosed.
Common Causes of F2 / F20
- Failed oven temperature sensor reporting low, so the control keeps heating
- Relay on the control board stuck closed, leaving an element powered
- Failed electronic control board
- Wiring fault to the element or sensor
- Cooling fan not running on models that have one
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the oven cool before doing anything - self-clean and runaway-temperature faults leave the cavity and door far hotter than a normal bake. GE's own first step is to switch off the circuit breaker or fuse feeding the range for a minute or two, then restore power. If the code clears and stays away, it was a one-off; if it returns, it is reporting a real fault. Do not run self-clean to see whether it behaves - self-clean is the hottest cycle the oven has, and an oven that already overheated is the wrong appliance to test that way. If F2 or F20 returns, switch the breaker off and book service.

- A stuck relay means an element can stay powered - potentially a fire risk if the fault is ignored.
- A range runs on a 240 V circuit and the control, keypanel and door-lock wiring all sit behind the console at that voltage.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
