What F1 Means
GE documents F1 as an open thermal sensor, caused by excessive heat in the microwave cavity. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. The same code appears on Advantium 120 V and 240 V models as an open thermal sensor. It can follow genuinely overheated food or an empty-cavity run, and it can also mean the sensor itself has failed.
Common Causes of F1
- Food overheated or burned in the cavity
- Microwave run empty or with very little load
- Failed thermal sensor
- Blocked vents or a failed cooling fan trapping heat
- Grease-clogged filters on an over-the-range unit
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the door and let the cavity cool with the microwave off; if something has scorched or caught fire inside, keep the door shut and unplug it. Never run a microwave empty. GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more. If F1 returns with a cool, empty cavity, book service - and if the unit is over the range, stop using it until then.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
- Overheating faults can involve the fan, the sensor or the magnetron circuit - the last of these is exactly what makes microwaves dangerous to open.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
