What F4 Means
F4 is documented as an open humidity sensor. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. Advantium 120 V and 240 V models list F4 as an open or shorted humidity sensor. That sensor is what sensor-cook and popcorn-type programmes use to judge doneness, so those features stop working while manual cooking usually still does.
Common Causes of F4
- Failed humidity sensor
- Grease build-up on the sensor or in the vent path
- Damaged sensor wiring or connector
- Saturated grease filters on an over-the-range model
- Control input fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more. Check the cavity is clean and the vents are not blocked with grease - on an over-the-range unit, wash the grease filters, because a saturated filter changes the airflow the sensor relies on. If F4 remains, sensor-cook features will not work properly and the unit needs service.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
- The sensor sits in the vent path inside the cabinet, and grease-related faults often need the housing opened for cleaning.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
