What F5 Means
F5 is documented as a shorted humidity sensor. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. It is the counterpart to F4: the sensor is present but its reading is invalid, so automatic sensor-cook programmes cannot judge the food.
Common Causes of F5
- Failed humidity sensor
- Grease or moisture contamination at the sensor
- Damaged wiring or a corroded connector
- Control input fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more. Clean the cavity and, on an over-the-range unit, wash the grease filters - grease contamination is a recurring cause of humidity-sensor faults. If F5 returns, the sensor or its wiring needs service, and sensor programmes should not be relied on in the meantime.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
- A shorted sensor and a control input fault look the same from outside and need internal measurement.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
