What F6 Means

On GE microwaves F6 is documented as a shorted temperature probe - the plug-in food probe used for temp-cook functions. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. It is a feature fault rather than a cooking-stopper, and the probe itself is a removable accessory.

Common Causes of F6

  • Failed or damaged temperature probe
  • Damaged probe cable
  • Dirty or damaged cavity socket
  • Probe not fully seated
  • Control input fault

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Unplug the probe from the cavity socket and inspect the plug and cable for damage, kinks or melted insulation; clean the plug gently if it is dirty. Try cooking without the probe, or with a known-good probe if you have one. GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for inspecting and reseating the probe - it is a plug-in accessory.
  • A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
