What 88 Means
GE documents 88 as a display that may appear until you set the relative humidity - it is a normal occurrence on power-up and does not indicate a problem. People read it as a fault because it looks like a code, but on these models it is the display waiting for a humidity setting.

Set your target relative humidity using the up and down pads; the display changes to the setting once it registers. Around 45-50% suits most homes. If the display stays on 88 and will not accept a setting, unplug the unit for 30 seconds and try again - a control that still will not respond after that needs service.
