What C2 Means

C2 is the longer-running version of the same drain problem GE describes for C1: the total pump-out time has gone past about seven minutes. GE's published instruction for C2 is simply to press RESET to stop the beep, but the underlying restriction is what actually needs attention, because the control only reaches C2 after the pump has struggled for several minutes.

Common Causes of C2

  • Restricted air gap, drain hose or disposer branch
  • Filter and sump area packed with food debris
  • Drain hose looped incorrectly or without a high loop
  • Weakening drain pump

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Press RESET/CANCEL to silence the alert, then work through the drain path with the dishwasher switched off: clear the air gap if you have one, run the disposer, and straighten the drain hose. Pull out the lower rack and lift out the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub, rinse it under the tap and refit it, since a filter packed with debris slows everything downstream. Run a short cycle afterwards to confirm.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • None for filter cleaning and drain-path checks - both are in the owner routine.
  • Pump and sump work needs the dishwasher disconnected from power and water and pulled from the cabinet, which is where DIY attempts commonly damage the floor or the water line.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

C2 FAQ

RESET only clears the alert. If the drain path was restricted, the code comes back on the next wash unless the restriction is dealt with.

A small amount of water in the sump is normal on GE dishwashers and keeps the seals wet. A tub with water above the filter after a cycle is not.
