What F48 / F49 Means
F48 and F49 report the turbidity sensor reading out of range - too high with F48, too low with F49. This code belongs to GE's LCD-display dishwasher controls (the PDT/PDP-style panels that spell out F-numbers), not to the older C1-C8 panels. The turbidity sensor measures how dirty the wash water is so the dishwasher can decide how long and how hard to wash. With the sensor unreliable, the machine can wash far longer than needed or cut cycles short.
Common Causes of F48 / F49
- Grease or soil film over the sensor window
- Heavily soiled sump and filter
- Failed turbidity sensor
- Harness or connector fault
- Control board input fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Clean the filter assembly at the bottom of the tub and rinse the sump area, since heavy soil and grease films sitting on the sensor are a common cause of out-of-range readings. Run a cycle with a dishwasher cleaner or a cup of white vinegar in the tub to clear grease, then do one power reset. If the code returns, the sensor or its wiring needs checking.

- The sensor is part of the sump assembly under the tub, alongside line-voltage pump and heater connections.
- A sensor that reads out of range after cleaning needs calibration or replacement with service data, not trial and error.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
