What 18 Means

GE documents an 18 power watch code as an indication of an issue with the electronic control in the microwave. GE publishes this among its microwave error, fault and function codes. It is a control-side fault rather than a cooking or sensor problem, so behaviour can be erratic.

Common Causes of 18

  • Failed electronic control board
  • Supply voltage problems or surge damage
  • Moisture or grease ingress on the control
  • Harness or connector fault

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

GE's own sequence is to press CLEAR/OFF or CANCEL and program the control again; if the code returns, disconnect power to the microwave for about 30 seconds and try once more. Note what the microwave does - fails to start, stops mid-cycle, display misbehaves - and quote the code when booking. If it starts or runs on its own, unplug it or switch off its breaker and leave it off until it is checked.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • A microwave is the one kitchen appliance where opening the cabinet is genuinely dangerous: the high-voltage capacitor can hold a lethal charge long after the microwave is unplugged, and the magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts. This is never a DIY repair, whatever the code says.
  • Control faults on a microwave are diagnosed inside the cabinet where the high-voltage capacitor sits - the one repair that is genuinely not worth the risk.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

No. On the UltraFast Combo, 18 is a prompt to clean the drain pump filter. Here it points at the microwave's electronic control.

On over-the-range and built-in models often yes, given installation cost; on a cheap countertop unit usually not. Get the quote first.
