What F3 / F4 Means
GE documents both F3 and F4 as the oven sensor needing replacement. GE publishes this among its range and wall oven codes for models with electronic oven controls, and states that a trained service technician should diagnose an F-code rather than the owner. The sensor is the thin probe in the cavity that reports temperature; when it reads open, shorted or simply wrong, the control cannot manage the oven and stops.

- Failed oven temperature sensor
- Sensor wiring damaged or connector corroded
- Sensor probe bent or knocked out of position
- Control board input fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the oven cool before doing anything - self-clean and runaway-temperature faults leave the cavity and door far hotter than a normal bake. GE's own first step is to switch off the circuit breaker or fuse feeding the range for a minute or two, then restore power. If the code clears and stays away, it was a one-off; if it returns, it is reporting a real fault. Check nothing has bent or pulled the sensor probe inside the cavity - a roasting tin pushed hard against it can dislodge it. That is the limit of owner work; the sensor is replaced from inside the cavity but its connector is behind the rear panel at line voltage.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A range runs on a 240 V circuit and the control, keypanel and door-lock wiring all sit behind the console at that voltage.
- The sensor connector is behind the oven rear panel, which means moving the range out and working next to 240 V connections.
- Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.
