What E38 Means
E38 is a dispenser error on GE front-load washers. This belongs to the E-code set on GE front-load washers (the GFW-style machines); the same letters and numbers mean different things on GE top-load machines and on the older GE Profile front-load platform. The automatic dispenser did not do what the control expected, so detergent, softener or bleach may not have gone into the drum at the right point in the cycle.
Common Causes of E38
- Dispenser drawer and channels clogged with detergent or softener residue
- Drawer not fully closed
- Dispenser motor or actuator fault
- Position sensor fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Pull the dispenser drawer out and wash it in warm water - thick detergent and softener set into a gel that blocks the channels and jams the mechanism. Clean the housing the drawer slides into with a cloth, refit it fully, and run a rinse cycle to see whether the code returns. Using less liquid softener and diluting thick detergents prevents most repeats.
