Dryer Repair, Done Right the First Time

With a GE electric, gas or heat-pump dryer, the first question is always airflow - restricted venting causes more no-heat and long-cycle complaints than any failed part, and it is a fire risk as well.

A dryer complaint is an airflow investigation first and an electrical one second. Lint screens, transition hoses, rigid duct runs and outside terminations all restrict airflow as they load up, and a restricted dryer runs hot, cycles its thermostats, trips cut-outs and takes far longer to dry. That is why every no-heat or long-cycle visit starts with the vent.

Once airflow is confirmed, we test the heating circuit – element and thermostats on electric models, igniter, coils and valve on gas models, the heat-pump circuit and drain on condenser models – along with the moisture sensors, the belt, idler and drum rollers. Gas work follows local code requirements, and lint accumulation is reported honestly because it is a safety issue rather than a housekeeping note.

Common Dryer Problems

01

Tumbling normally but producing no heat

02

Taking two or three cycles to dry a normal load

03

Shutting down part-way through and restarting only when cool

04

Squealing or thumping as the drum turns

05

Drum not turning at all while the motor runs

06

Sensor-dry cycles ending far too early

Why Trust Us With Your GE Dryer

  • Tested, Not Guessed | We test the suspected dryer part before recommending that anything is replaced.
  • Parts for Popular Models | Commonly needed dryer parts travel with our technicians; less common parts are ordered and the return visit is scheduled before we leave.
  • Safety First | Power, water and gas are isolated before we work on your dryer, and high-voltage and refrigerant work is handled only by the technician.
  • Warranty-Aware Advice | If your dryer may still be under manufacturer coverage we tell you, because a repair by anyone other than an authorized technician can put that coverage at risk.

Dryer Repair FAQ

Airflow. Clean the lint screen, then check the vent run behind the machine and the outside termination flap - a crushed transition hose or a lint-packed duct is the most common cause, and it is also the fire risk. Stop using the dryer until airflow has been checked if you find heavy lint or a blocked termination.

It will not start a fire by having no heat, but the reason for the no-heat may matter. A tripped thermal cut-out is often the symptom of restricted airflow, so simply replacing the fuse without clearing the duct puts the machine straight back into the same overheating condition. On a gas dryer, anything involving the burner, the valve or the gas line is technician work.

Heat-pump dryers run at lower temperatures by design, which is gentler on fabrics but takes longer per load. Cycle times well beyond the manual's figures, or a machine that never finishes, do point to a fault - usually a blocked filter or condenser, or a drainage or sensor problem.
