What F97 Means

F97 means the control expected the water to heat and saw no heat source working. This code belongs to GE's LCD-display dishwasher controls (the panels that spell out F-numbers), not the older C1-C8 panels. The heating element, its relay or the temperature sensing that proves heating is happening are the components involved. Wash and dry performance drop noticeably when the water never reaches temperature.

Common Causes of F97

  • Failed heating element
  • Heater relay on the control board not closing
  • Temperature sensor not reporting the rise
  • Wiring or connector fault at the element

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

One power reset is the owner-level step: switch the dishwasher's breaker off for about 30 seconds, restore power and run a short cycle. Also confirm your household hot water is working normally, since a cold fill plus a heater fault is a common combination. If F97 returns, the heater circuit needs testing, and that is live work under the tub - not an owner job.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The element terminals are at line voltage under the tub, immediately next to the sump and water connections.
  • An element that tests fine with a failed relay behind it produces the same code - measurement, not guesswork, tells them apart.
  • Damage caused during a repair attempt may not be covered - check your warranty terms first.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F97 FAQ

Often yes. Drying on these dishwashers depends on the water and load being hot, so an absent heat source shows up as poor drying first.

It will wash after a fashion with hot inlet water, but sanitising and drying cannot work as intended, so booking the repair is the practical route.
